It's Monday and the first day of a new month. A perfect storm for starting a healthy habit or trying again. I'm not sure why we attach such significance to Mondays, new months and new years. Maybe it's because beginnings seem so fresh, full of hope and well, new. There is a bit of magic in novelty. Getting a new hair cut, opening a gift, seeing something for the first time. Anticipation is exciting and keeps life interesting but in my opinion the real magic is in the doing. In the getting up and making it happen, even when you don't want to. I think this quote sums it up: "I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed"-Michael Jordan.
What we learn by not giving up is as important, if not more so, as achieving the goal. Practice may not make perfect but practice does improve the practitioner. We build resilience and strength of mind and those things follow and assist us in every aspect of our lives. In no other role has this become more clear to me than as a parent. Starting with pregnancy, you begin to understand that you can do all the things you think are right and still not get the desired result. How your body responds to growing a human is anyone's guess, but you still try. You still do all that you can to ensure that the little human inside has the best chance to be healthy. When we remember to apply the same efforts to ourselves, trying to do the right thing more often than not, we see results. The scale can not measure the confidence we earn by continuing to persevere even when it feels like you're failing.
What does perseverance look like? It doesn't mean trying the same thing and expecting different results, that's the definition of crazy. If you love the exercise you're doing but you've fallen off the wagon, that's a relatively easy fix. If you've never found something you love to do, keep trying, there is something that you will love or at least like enough to keep doing. In my experience, walking is one of the easiest forms of exercise to begin and maintain.
